Handfasting Ceremony with Custom Patchwork Cloth.
This novel ceremony combines the pagan ceremony of handfasting,
which is basically a simple ceremony that gently binds the hands with
loose cloth to symbolize 2 lives joining as one. This is usually done by
a ribbon or rope. This idea replaces the ribbon/rope with a patchwork cloth that is made
from various pieces of light weight cloth provided by your friends and family.
The added symbolism: that we all are bound by our love for
each other. What a wonderful way to acknowledge family and friends
who are not able to attend your destination wedding ceremony, but welcome in spirit
by providing a piece of personal cloth that is sewn into the patchwork.
The cloth provided should be from an item worn or held close, such as a shirt, pants,
blouse, bed sheet, lightly woven towels, etc. The patchwork will be perhaps 12" to 24" wide and 24"-60" long. This depends on the number of pieces presented for sewing
into this treasured souvenier. You may want to sew this yourself or ask a family or
friend to assist you, but if you like the idea and need help...
I've partnered with a local seamstress, Oksana, who kindly offered her
services to sew this handfasting patchwork together.
Here are the specifics: Each person is to send a piece of cloth that ranges from 6" to 12" square. Once all pieces are in
the actual size of each cut piece and the overall dimensions will be decided. This way you are sure to have enough. The extra cloth can be later presented to the couple as another gift.
Allow 14 days to sew the handfasting cloth, so ask your guests to send
their pieces at least 30 days prior to the ceremony. This is very important,
as last minute additions will add significantly to the cost of the patchwork.

up to 10 pieces: $75.00
up to 20 pieces: $100.00
up to 30 pieces: $125.00
Up to 40 pieces: $150.00
Up to 50 pieces: $175.00
Up to 75 pieces: $240.00
up to 100 pieces: $300.00
Add backing cloth (provided by couple) $50.00
Backing cloth provided by tailor additional $35.00 (plus $50.00)

Actual width and length of the hand fasting patchwork cloth is determined by the
number of pieces incorporated into the tapestry quilt and will be guaranteed
only after all pieces are received. Generally each piece will be in the 3" to 6" square
range.
Please allow a minimum of 14 days to complete the hand fasting patchwork.
The very nature of this work is that each is very different and determined by
each individual piece provided. All cloth pieces must be clean, unfrayed,
Avoid sending too heavy or too light fabrics such as denim, corduroy, and lace.
Ideal fabrics are cotton, silk, rayon, summer wool, polyester.
